Chinese Festivals & Traditions

Spring Festival, Lantern Festival, Qingming, Dragon Boat and Mid-Autumn: what they celebrate and how.

Chinese festivals offer a fascinating introduction to the country’s history, family values, food, and cultural traditions.

1. Spring Festival – 春节 (Chūnjié)

Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is one of the most important celebrations in China.

Families reunite, enjoy festive meals, exchange greetings, and celebrate the beginning of a new lunar year.

Traditions: Family reunions, red envelopes, dumplings, and festive decorations.

2. Lantern Festival – 元宵节 (Yuánxiāo Jié)

Celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first lunar month, the Lantern Festival marks the end of the traditional Chinese New Year celebration period.

Traditions: Lantern displays, lantern riddles, and sweet rice balls called tāngyuán (汤圆).

3. Qingming Festival – 清明节 (Qīngmíng Jié)

Qingming is a time for remembering ancestors and honouring family traditions.

Many families visit ancestral graves, make offerings, and enjoy spring outings.

Traditions: Ancestor remembrance, tomb sweeping, and springtime activities.

4. Dragon Boat Festival – 端午节 (Duānwǔ Jié)

The Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month.

It is associated with the poet Qu Yuan and is famous for dragon boat racing and traditional sticky rice dumplings.

Traditions: Dragon boat races and eating zòngzi (粽子).

5. Mid-Autumn Festival – 中秋节 (Zhōngqiū Jié)

The Mid-Autumn Festival celebrates family reunion and the beauty of the full moon.

Families often gather to enjoy mooncakes and admire the moon.
