Pinyin is the Romanisation system used to represent the pronunciation of Mandarin Chinese. It helps learners read and pronounce Chinese words.
The Four Mandarin Tones
Mandarin has four main tones and a neutral tone.
| Tone | Example | Pronunciation |
|---|---|---|
| First tone | mā 妈 (mother) | High and level |
| Second tone | má 麻 (hemp) | Rising |
| Third tone | mǎ 马 (horse) | Low, often dipping |
| Fourth tone | mà 骂 (to scold) | Sharp and falling |
| Neutral tone | ma 吗 (question particle) | Light and short |
Why Are Tones Important?
Changing the tone can change the meaning of a word. For example, mā (mother) and mǎ (horse) sound similar to beginners, but have different tones and meanings.
Three Tips for Beginners
- Practise tones aloud rather than only memorising tone marks.
- Listen to native speakers and repeat short phrases.
- Learn pronunciation together with useful everyday vocabulary.
Try it yourself: Say mā, má, mǎ, mà aloud. Can you hear and produce the difference?
